Job Vacancies

Why work for us?

New Vacancies for Veterinary Surgeons

We need a BIG hand!

We have a good work ethos and aim to avoid stress by working sensible hours, with equally shared on-call, good remuneration and live in a very relaxed and beautiful part of the country. Have a look at "Why work for us" for more background. We have a good team of Vets and an equally good, friendly team of Nurses, Receptionists and other staff, all lead by our Practice Manager, Tina Black (tb@parksidevets.com).  We have low staff turnover.

These posts advertise the replacement of an equine colleague who is moving to a more specialised position and for a new small-animal vet to cover maternity leave but with a chance of permanency.

The equine position is mainly equine with some farm and one, occasionally two days per week of small animal work (the split can be discussed). Our clients are friendly, caring folk who want the best for their animals and we always strive to provide the very best of care for all. You need to be able to work as part of a team as well as on your own. Although back-up is always available, this job would be more suited to an experienced veterinary surgeon who is competent in all disciplines and wants to develop/improve their equine skills.

We are a RCVS accredited practice to tier 2 in equine, farm and small animal practice, our main branch has a dedicated equine treatment area with stocks, stables and a secure trot-up / lunge area. We have extensive diagnostic facilities in house including high definition ultrasound machine with four different probes; a video endoscope and a full in-house laboratory for blood tests. In addition we have a portable x-ray machine which gives us excellent radiographs; an additional portable ultrasound machine used for rectal reproduction work in horse and cattle and a fibre optic video endoscope. We offer a full dental service to our equine clients and have a power float for all the difficult cases. We offer AI of mares using both chilled and frozen semen.

We have a large variety of equine clients from those with a single pet pony to those with several expensive horses competing at high levels. We travel across Angus, Fife and Perthshire visiting both individual horses and large yards. Our farm work is mostly suckler cows with some sheep and a few camelids. Our farmers are progressive, forward thinkers most of whom have a herd health plan in place and our advice is valued and acted upon. Our small animal work is very varied and backed up by a team of experienced veterinary surgeons including two certificate holders. We have a large support staff including seven fully qualified veterinary nurses.

You will be one of four full time vets who do the large animal work within the practice. We have a further eight full time and two part-time vets who only do small animal work. You will only do large animal (equine and farm) work out of hours on a one in four rota (one night a week and roughly one weekend a month). You will get a half day off every week and an additional half day off in the week following a weekend on call, which is usually taken on the Monday with your normal half day, so you get all Monday off after a weekend on duty.

A normal day starts at 8.30am and finishes at approximately 5.00pm or later depending on calls. Your half day work is from 8.30am until 1.00pm and in three out of every four weeks you will have one small-animal finish at 6.30pm, in the fourth week you will not have the 6.30pm finish because you have your night on duty and the weekend on duty. There are small-animal vets consulting at the surgery (and branches) later than this and the small animal vets consult on a Saturday, you will not have any Saturday small-animal consulting. Every night there is also a small animal vet and a veterinary nurse on call. We have three very nice ladies who answer the phones for us out of hours and bleep the relevant vet for the emergency, so you have no phone to answer out of hours. The bleepers are very reliably and work everywhere in our practice area so you are not tied down when on call.

The small-animal post of Veterinary Surgeon is to cover maternity leave and you would join a one-in-eight rota. We work a whole week on-call (starting at 4.45pm during weekdays), then you have 7 weeks with no on-call, just one 6-30pm finish per week. Possibly the best working hours you will find. We work from 3 small-animal centres and we aim to keep continuity by having specific vets at specific surgeries. You would be based predominately at the Dundee surgery, a large new-build. See our facilities here. We have orthopaedic and cardiac and ultrasound sepcialisations in-house, full Iddex labs in-house and a great team of nurses (seven) and nursing assistants. No phone duties. Maternity leave is a minimum of 6 months and up to 12 months and there is a chance that this post could be permanent.

We encourage and fund CPD, pay your RCVS membership and you will be fully insured by the VDS. You will have five weeks plus three days holiday, with an additional four days off over the Christmas holiday period every year. This includes all local and bank holidays. You will be provided with a work mobile phone which is upgraded every year and can be used for personal use within certain (generous) limitations. We do not provide a car or fuel for these jobs because the tax cost to you is now too high. Instead you will be paid a tax free mileage allowance (based on HM Revenue guidelines) for all business miles you do in your own car.

Have a look around the web-site for some insight into our practice.

Please send your application and CV, with contact details, in confidence, to Tina Black at tb@parksidevets.com and we will confirm receipt. Please add the words new vet to the subject box. Alternatively, send mail to, or telephone our Dundee address. Further details can be had by phone - ask for a partner or talk to Tina -  01382 810777
